Search engine optimization sounds like it belongs to a specialist with a keyword-research subscription and a dashboard full of graphs. For a six-page firm website, it mostly isn't. It's a short list of unglamorous fixes, done properly, in the right order.

Here are the eight that actually move the needle for a small company — roughly in the order you should tackle them.

1. Fix your title tags and meta descriptions

Every page needs a unique, specific title and description — not "Home | [Firm Name]" repeated with a different word swapped in. Write the title the way a client would search: "Small Business Tax Advisory in [City]" tells a search engine and a human exactly what the page is, far better than a generic company name ever will. The meta description won't directly boost rankings, but it's your pitch in the search results — it decides whether someone clicks you or the firm below you.

2. Write service pages around what clients search, not internal jargon

Clients don't search "HR Solutions." They search things like "do I need an HR consultant for a 15-person company" or "payroll compliance help small business." Build each service page around the real question a client is asking, in their words, and answer it directly in the first paragraph. This single change usually does more for both rankings and conversions than any technical fix.

3. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

For a firm serving a specific region, this is arguably the single highest-leverage thing on this list — and it's free. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile (address, hours, category, phone number, a handful of photos) is what shows up when someone searches "accountant near me," often above the regular search results entirely. An incomplete or missing profile means you're invisible for exactly the searches most likely to convert.

4. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

A large share of the people searching for an advisor are doing it on a phone, often during a stressful moment — a tax deadline, a payroll problem. If your site takes eight seconds to load or the text is too small to read without pinching to zoom, they'll leave before they see anything you have to say. Google also uses page speed and mobile usability as a ranking factor, so this isn't just about the visitor — it affects whether you show up at all.

5. Publish consistently, even if it's just one post a month

A blog that hasn't been updated since 2022 signals — to both readers and search engines — that a site isn't actively maintained. You don't need to publish daily. One well-written post a month, answering a real question your clients actually ask ("What changed in this year's small business tax filing?" "Do I need to reclassify my contractors?"), builds what's called topical authority over time: a track record that tells search engines your site is a genuine, current source on the subject.

6. Use descriptive alt text and clean URLs

Every image should have alt text that describes what's actually in it — not for search engines alone, but because it's what makes your site usable for visitors relying on a screen reader. And URLs should read like /services/tax-advisory rather than /page?id=4821. Both are small, one-time fixes with a lasting payoff.

7. Set up Search Console and Analytics — and actually look at them

Google Search Console (free) tells you what people are searching when they find your site, and flags technical problems before they cost you traffic. Analytics tells you what happens once they arrive — which pages people actually read, and where they leave. Without these, every SEO decision is a guess. With them, it's a five-minute monthly check-in.

8. Earn a handful of real backlinks

A few relevant, real links back to your site — from your local chamber of commerce, an industry association, a guest post on a partner's blog — carry meaningfully more weight than dozens of low-quality directory listings. For a small firm, this doesn't need to be a campaign. It can be as simple as asking three organizations you're already part of to link to your site.

Where to actually start

If all eight feel like a lot, start with numbers 1 through 3. Title tags, real service-page language, and a complete Google Business Profile are the fastest path from invisible to found — and none of them require a developer, a budget, or a keyword tool subscription. Everything else compounds from there.
